How to update Microsoft SQL 2012 Express Service pack on Lync Front End Server?

Recently I found out that SQL Express service pack on front end is different than SQL service pack on back end, MSFT mentioned that if SQL service pack is mismatch might affect server performance. (Didn’t really tested, will share my experience later)

 I have recently updated service pack on Front End. Here is the best practices.

First check existing Service pack using below path:

Path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.LYNCLOCAL\MSSQL\Log

Open any ERRORLOG.n file and see the version details: Look like below

2015-07-08 19:27:41.65 Server      Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.2100.60 (X64)

You can verify SQL version using Control panel: below screenshot

Download the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 (SP2) Express.


SQL 2012 SP2 URL:

Copy Service pack to C:\Install or any other folder.


PS C:\Install> SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe /ACTION=Patch /allinstances /IAcceptSQLServerLicenseTerms

Now accept the license

Accept the license, Select All DBS.

Click on Next to install Service pack 2.

Now Service pack 2 is successfully installed.

Now check the version again.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.LYNCLOCAL\MSSQL\Log

2015-08-10 16:06:22.68 Server      Microsoft SQL Server 2012 - 11.0.5058.0 (X64)

You must restart your Lync Server after SQL Service pack updates.
