Microsoft Lync Server 2013 to Skype for Business Server 2015 in-place upgrade process (Mediation and Edge Server). Part:2

Microsoft Lync Server 2013 to Skype for Business Server 2015 in-place upgrade process (Mediation and Edge Server).
Part:2

My previous article talked about where to start upgrade process, how to publish topology, upgrade Front End server. This article will cover Mediation server and Edge Server.

Edge Server needs some extra steps so covering Edge and Mediation separately.

First check whether Mediation and Edge Server pool been upgraded to Skype for Business Server 2015 in Topology or not.

If not then upgrade Edge pool to Skype for Business Server 2015 pool and publish topology to push updates to CMS database.

Open topology > expand Mediation Pools in Lync Server 2013 edition> right click on pool > Select ‘Upgrade to Skype for Business Server 2015…’

Same process for Edge Server pool.

Once Mediation and Edge pool upgrade to Skype for Business Server 2015 pool.

First install the pre-requisite.
a.     Make sure 32 GB free space must be on Mediation and Edge server on installation directory.
b.     Run the Windows updates. (Install recommended updates Control Pane > Windows Updates)
c.      Edge and Mediation Lync Server must be on February 2015 CU, I have installed May 2015 Cumulative updates.
d.     Install latest patches including Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5.

Note: If you have .Net Framework 4.5 is installed however Skype for Business also require .Net Framework 3.5.

Mediation Server upgrade process is very similar to Front End Server. Upgrade process get complete soon compare to Front end Server.

Mediation Server upgrade: Once pre-requisite complete > Stop Services on all Mediation Server using Disable-CsComputer –Scorch > run Setup.exe  and wait until server get upgrade > Start services on mediation using Start-CsPool –PoolFqdn <>.

For Edge Server upgrade:

After prerequisite complete -

e.     Check Replication status. You cannot perform Edge Server upgrade until you have replicated topology changes to Edge server computer.

Safer side you can run Invoke-CsManagementStoreReplication

PowerShell command on Front End server to replicate topology changes to Edge server.

f.       Then stop services on all Edge servers on Edge pool. Run below command let on all Edge server to disable Lync Services so when server get restarted services will not start automatically.

Disable-CsComputer -Scorch

g.     Now start ‘Setup.exe’ to install Skype for Business Server 2015 installation. (E:\Setup\Amd64\Setup.exe, right click on Setup.exe and run as Administrator).

h.     It will install Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable

i.        Then setup will ask you.

a.     Connect to the Internet to check for update

b.     Don’t check for updates right now.

Select Don’t check for updates..

j.       Accept license.

k.     If you have not installed Windows Server pre-requisite then Skype for Business Server 2015 upgrade setup install it and ask for restart.

Specific to our installation, Windows 2012 need to KB2858668 it will install and ask reboot.

l.        Once Server back, Run setup file to start server upgrade.

Now you can see server upgrade is in progress.

m.   Once installation get completed then click OK.

n.     Finally you will receive message window “Upgrade to Skype for Business 2015 completed successfully!”

o.     Next step is to start services on Edge server.

You can use Start-CsPool –PoolFqdn <> or simply run Start-CsWindowsService command let.

p.     Verify the Services on Edge Server.

Thank you.
