Lync Server Cumulative updates FAQ

Lync Server Cumulative updates FAQ

Q: What is best order to update Cumulative updates on Lync/ Skype for Business Server?

A: Follow the below order-

1.     First install CU updates on all Front End Server and then update backed database (SQL DB) using below command.

2.     Install CU updates on all Director Server.

3.     Install CU on Persistent Chat / Monitoring / Archiving server.

Use cmdlet to update persistent Chat server backend database:

4.     Install CU update on all Edge server.

5.     Lync Server component is not install or running on Web App Server (WAC) so you don’t have to install CU on WAC server.

Q: Does standard and enterprise edition server CU update process is different?

A: CU update process is the same as updating a Standard and Enterprise Edition Server.

Q: Does server reboot require?

A:  Once the updates have been installed, restart the server if prompted to do so.  Once the server has been restarted, make sure that all of the services have returned to the running state and then run the Get-CsPoolUpgradeReadinessState cmdlet again and repeat the process until all of the Front End Servers in the pool have been updated.

Q: How to update backend database?

A: After updating Front End server you must update backend database. To keep backend database up-to-date. Use below command to update backend database.

Install-CsDatabase -ConfiguredDatabases -SqlServerFqdn FEBE.FQDN -Verbose

Q: How do I update Edge server?

A: You can stop services on edge and run LyncServerUpdateInstaller.exe on edge server and reboot server once installation. Once the server has been restarted, make sure that all of the services have returned to the running state.

No other step require.

Q: Do I need to run Enable-CsTopology and Bootstrapper on a SBA?

A: No, Web Components aren't installed on an SBA/SBS.

Q: Can I install Lync CU on Lync servers (FE and Edge) without applying the latest updates on the CMS?

A: Yes, however if the CMS is on a Lync Server 2013 pool, it would be recommended to run any updates for the CMS once the pool hosting the CMS and it's paired pool, if one exists, are updated

Q: When applying the SQL backend update (Install-CsDatabase -ConfiguredDatabases -SqlServerFqdn -Verbose) do we need to stop all front end and director services for that pool or can we run the update with the front end / director services running?

A: This completely depend on you. You can stop services on all server and update backend DB so your will not see backend disconnect for a second. Or you can keep services running. If you perform the update with the services running you'll notice some errors in the Lync Server Event Log when the services lose connectivity to the databases. Once the updates are complete you should see informational messages logged about the services reestablishing connectivity.

Q: Do I need to follow Step 3: Enable the Mobility service" and "Step 4: Enable the Unified Communications Web API"?

A: You only need to run Steps 3, 4 and 5 if you are updating from the RTM version. Upgrading from a previous CU update only requires Steps 1 (Install CU) and 2 (update backend database).

Q: How to update SQL backend database and CMS database?

A: once you update all Frond End server from pool you need to update backend database.

Use below command let if pool server does not hold CMS:

Install-CsDatabase -ConfiguredDatabases -SqlServerFqdn (FEBE.FQDN) -Verbose

Use below command let if pool server hold CMS:

Install-CsDatabase -CentralManagementDatabase -SqlServerFqdn -SqlInstanceName -Verbose

Note: if backed database uses default SQL instance then do not use ‘SqlInstanceName’ otherwise you will receive error message.

Q: How much downtime SQL database update require?

A: Not exact downtime however experience say 1-2 minutes Database update.

Q: Do we need to update Principle and Mirror SQL database or only Principle?

A: You may need to update only Principle database (primary database). First make sure all database uses primary server and then update backend database.

Thank you.
