How to Enable / Disable Outlook logging?

When you troubleshoot Outlook related issues, like slowness when accessing mailbox, profile related, display changes, large mailboxes access/ slowness, add-ins, folder related issues, then outlook advance logging is must because it will show you valuable tracing information which will be useful while troubleshooting issues.

How to enable advance logging on Outlook 2013 and 2016 with global logging?

Follow below steps (same step for 64 and 32-bit version:

  1. Exit Outlook completely.
  2. Start Registry Editor, (Start > RUN > Regedit)

Note: Manually create any registry keys or values if they don't exist. And make sure to take backup of registry before modifying because wrong registry changes can cause operating system failure.

  1. Subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\xx.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
    1. DWORD: EnableETWLogging
    2. Value: 1

  1. Subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\xx.0\Outlook\Options\Shutdown
    1. DWORD: FastShutdownBehavior
    2. Value: 2

Notes: If FastShutdownBehavior already exists, make note of the value.

The xx.0 placeholder stands for 15.0 in Outlook 2013 and 16.0 in Outlook 2016.

  1. Exit Registry Editor.
  2. Start Outlook, and reproduce your issue.
  3. After you have reproduced the issue, exit Outlook and use log for advance troubleshooting.

You must restore the original settings back otherwise log will continually be getting generated and it will eat your disk space.

Step to restore settings:

1. Exit Outlook > open Registry > visit location step 2. and then change below values:

  • Change the value for EnableETWLogging to 0.
  • Change the value for FastShutdownBehavior to 0,unless you noted an existing value for FastShutdownBehavior in step 3.

In case you want enable global logging in Outlook 2013/ 2016 then follow below step:

  1. Open Outlook 2013/2016 > File > select Options > In the Outlook Options dialog box, click Advanced > then Scroll down the list of settings, and then select the Enable troubleshooting logging (requires restarting Outlook) option.
  2. Then Click OK.
  3. Exit Outlook and then enable above registry key as well.

Make sure to disable logging and restore registry key otherwise log will eat your disk space.

Sometime, “.etl” log files aren't generated as expected due to permission issue, then you must add your user account to the Performance Log Users group on the computer where outlook logging needs to enable.

Thank you.

  1. What about obsolete poor souls, who still use Outlook 2010? No logging there?
